Get Legendary FET Compression with Tone and Attitude, True to the Original
Create with a Legend
In 1999, when Bill Putnam, Jr. relaunched Universal Audio, a reproduction of the Blackface 1176LN was the company’s first product. Reissued in 2000, it was based on the circuit designs of the C, D, and E revs of the classic 1176. One of the most critical aspects of recreating the sound of the original hardware, was faithfully reproducing the original output transformer, complete with the additional windings that provided the feedback signal to the final line output amplifier circuit. Bill Putnam Jr. found extensive design notes that enabled him to recreate and improve his father’s original design.

Add Toneful, Colorful Compression
Billed as a “true peak limiter with all transistor circuitry and superior performance on all types of program material,” the 1176’s major selling point was its ultra-fast attack time – a mere 20 µS (.00002 seconds) at its fastest setting. But engineers soon found out that the 1176 also injected character, attitude, and vibe to anything run through its circuitry. Some even used the 1176 with the compression turned off, just for the distinctive tone it imparts. The unit’s amplifiers and transformers all by themselves give a desirable “hot” quality to anything passing through them.

For audio professionals and enthusiasts seeking unparalleled control and character in their recordings, the Universal Audio 1176 LN Classic Limiting Amplifier is an essential investment. Renowned for its distinctive sonic signature and fast, precise dynamics processing, this legendary compressor elevates any mix with clarity, punch, and warmth. Whether you are tracking vocals, drums, or instruments, the 1176 LN offers a reliable solution to tame peaks and add musicality without sacrificing the natural tone of your source.
The core appeal of the 1176 LN lies in its unique combination of speed and coloration. Unlike modern digital compressors, this unit uses a FET (Field Effect Transistor) design, which delivers an incredibly fast attack time as low as 20 microseconds. What this means for you is the ability to catch and control transient spikes that might otherwise distort or clip your signal, resulting in a cleaner, more polished sound. At the same time, the 1176 LN imparts a subtle harmonic richness that enhances the presence and warmth of any audio, making it ideal for vocals that need to cut through a mix or drums that require added punch.
Another significant feature is the unit’s legendary “all-buttons-in” mode, which engages all ratio buttons simultaneously to create a wildly aggressive compression effect. This unique setting is prized by engineers for adding character and intensity to tracks, especially on snare drums, vocals, and guitars. The 1176 LN also offers four ratio options—4:1, 8:1, 12:1, and 20:1—providing flexible control over how aggressively the signal is compressed. This versatility ensures that you can achieve anything from subtle leveling to extreme limiting, depending on the demands of your project.
From a practical standpoint, the Universal Audio 1176 LN Classic Limiting Amplifier is built with a robust, all-metal chassis to withstand the rigors of both studio and live environments. It features balanced XLR inputs and outputs, ensuring compatibility with professional audio gear and maintaining signal integrity throughout the signal chain. The unit’s compact dimensions make it easy to integrate into any rack setup without occupying excessive space, while the intuitive front panel layout allows engineers to make quick adjustments during sessions.
This compressor is a staple for a wide range of applications, from music production to post-production and broadcasting. Its ability to shape dynamics with precision makes it invaluable on lead vocals, adding presence and smoothness without unnatural pumping. Drummers and percussionists benefit from the device’s fast attack and release times, which enhance the snap and sustain of drum hits. Guitarists and bass players use the 1176 LN to control dynamics while adding a distinctive tonal coloration that enriches the overall sound.
Priced at ₹335,599, the Universal Audio 1176 LN Classic Limiting Amplifier represents a worthwhile investment for professionals who demand both sonic excellence and reliability. Its proven performance and iconic status in the audio industry assure users that they are acquiring a tool capable of delivering consistently outstanding results. When precision, character, and durability matter most, the 1176 LN stands out as a timeless classic that will enhance your productions for years to come.
