Telefunken TDP-1 Mono Passive Direct Box

TDP-1 Mono Passive Direct Box

The single-channel TDP-1 passive direct box combine premium though-hole components, European-made transformers and rugged, road-ready construction to deliver rich, warm tone in any environment. Boasting an ultra-flat frequency response with extremely low distortion and self-noise, the TDP direct boxes excel at capturing everything from synthesizers and keyboards to acoustic-electric guitar and electric bass with a certain subtle and unique character. At the heart of all TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik direct boxes are custom-wound output transformers made in England by OEP/Carnhill. Each channel features premium metal Amphenol connectors and recessed metal switches to engage the -15 dB pad and ground lift. These elements combined with premium passive components (including 1% tolerance metal film resistors, and WIMA and Nichicon capacitors) are all housed in a rugged aluminum chassis designed to withstand the wear and tear of the road. Like all TELEFUNKEN microphones, all TDP direct boxes are assembled and critically tested in Connecticut, USA.

For musicians, sound engineers, and audio professionals seeking pristine signal transfer with minimal noise and maximum reliability, the Telefunken TDP-1 Mono Passive Direct Box offers an essential solution. In live performances and studio recordings alike, ensuring a clean, balanced audio signal from instruments to mixing consoles is critical. The TDP-1 is designed to deliver exactly that, allowing your sound to come through transparently and without interference, enhancing both the clarity and quality of your audio setup.

One of the primary challenges in connecting electric instruments or line-level signals to professional audio equipment is managing impedance mismatches and eliminating hum or buzz caused by ground loops. The Telefunken TDP-1 addresses these issues through its passive direct box design, which requires no external power and uses a custom-wound OEP/Carnhill transformer. This premium transformer is renowned for its superior magnetic properties and low distortion, ensuring that the audio signal is transferred with exceptional fidelity. As a result, the TDP-1 delivers a balanced XLR output with less than 200 ohms output impedance, making it highly compatible with a wide variety of mixing consoles and recording gear while reducing noise and interference.

The frequency response of the TDP-1 spans an impressive 10 Hz to 70 kHz, plus or minus 1 dB. This wide range means the direct box faithfully preserves the full spectrum of your instrument’s tone, from deep bass notes to shimmering highs, without coloration or loss of detail. Whether you’re connecting a bass guitar, keyboard, or other electric instrument, this ensures your sound remains natural and vibrant. The device’s input impedance exceeds 20 k ohms, preventing any loading effects on your instrument’s pickups and preserving their original tonal characteristics.

Physically, the TDP-1 is compact and portable, measuring 100 mm in length and width by 50 mm in height, and weighing just 490 grams. This makes it easy to integrate into pedalboards or carry between gigs without adding significant bulk or weight. The unit features a 1/4 inch input jack, a 1/4 inch thru output for signal pass-through, and a balanced XLR output, providing flexible connection options for different setups. The maximum sound pressure level it can handle with less than 1% total harmonic distortion is greater than +18 dBV, ensuring it remains distortion-free even with high-output instruments or line-level sources.

In practical use, the Telefunken TDP-1 is ideal for live sound reinforcement and studio recording environments where signal integrity and noise reduction are paramount. It excels at converting unbalanced high-impedance signals from electric guitars, basses, keyboards, or electronic drums into balanced low-impedance signals suitable for professional mixing consoles, PA systems, or audio interfaces. This conversion helps avoid cable-induced noise and hum, resulting in cleaner mixes and better overall sound quality.

Choosing the Telefunken TDP-1 Mono Passive Direct Box means investing in a high-quality, reliable solution trusted by professionals worldwide. Its combination of a custom-wound Carnhill transformer, wide frequency response, and robust build quality ensures that your instrument’s tone is preserved with unmatched clarity and precision. Whether you’re recording in the studio or performing live, the TDP-1 provides the confidence that your audio signal will be transmitted cleanly and accurately every time, empowering you to focus on what matters most—delivering outstanding sound.
