PL GoldMike MK2 Overview

SPL’s 2485 GoldMike MK2 is a discrete Class-A, dual-channel microphone and instrument preamplifier with a transistor stage. The GoldMike Mark2, like its predecessor, uses a hybrid solid state and tube architecture to provide the best of both worlds.

A 24-bit, 192 kHz A to D converter is an optional feature

The rack-mountable GoldMike MK2 boasts improved tonal flexibility and adaptability, making it an ideal dual-channel front end for practically any modern production situation.
The GoldMike MK2 is the culmination of all of our expertise and knowledge from its predecessor, and it represents an enhanced, more versatile, and modernized version.

We’ve included technology that has already been shown to improve tonal outcomes in other SPL products. For example, the instrument input is based on a Class-A impedance converter introduced in the SPL GainStation.

The hybrid preamplifier idea had a vital role in the predecessor’s success. It blends transistor and tube preamplifier stages, focussing on their technological and acoustic advantages: The efficiency and low noise of a discrete transistor stage are enhanced by the musical coloration of a tube stage.

The transistor stage is made up of single transistors in a Class-A configuration. The circuitry is entirely discrete, with each transistor perfectly optimized for its specialized function. There will be no ICs in this preamplifier stage since they cannot be optimized to the degree that SPL aims for. The discrete Class-A transistor stage was designed particularly for this preamplifier.

The degree of tube pre-amplification is no longer set at +6 dB like its predecessor. The GoldMike MK2 offers three alternative tube pre-amplifications: the basic +6 dB, +12 dB and +18 dB. This provides you with more creative options with tube saturation and limiting effects. Experiment to get the sounds you want.

We have also added a parameter to the popular Flair circuitry to extend the versatility of the “presence” upgrade.
Channel separation is critical for stereo imaging because the GoldMike MK2 is a dual-channel preamplifier. As a result, the print-board arrangement is symmetrically duplicated from channel 1 to channel 2, with the power supply in the center. This produces an identical signal flow that supports a naturally balanced stereo picture. Furthermore, the print board has extra-large ground portions, maximizing protection against crosstalk and interference.

The SPL Audio Gold Mike MK2 Dual-Channel Preamplifier is designed for audio professionals who demand exceptional sound clarity and precision in their recordings. Whether you’re a studio engineer, musician, or sound designer, this preamplifier offers an unparalleled blend of tube warmth and transparent signal amplification, ensuring your audio captures every nuance with pristine detail. If you are seeking to elevate your studio setup with a preamp that delivers both character and technical excellence, the Gold Mike MK2 stands as a premium choice.

One of the standout features of the Gold Mike MK2 is its dual-channel design, allowing for simultaneous processing of two audio sources with complete control. This is particularly beneficial for tracking vocals and instruments together while maintaining consistent tonal quality. The high maximum input gain of 23 dBu ensures that even the quietest microphone signals can be amplified without introducing unwanted noise, while the input impedance settings of 2.8 kΩ for microphones and 1 MΩ for instruments mean optimal matching for a wide range of sources, preserving the natural tonal balance.

The Gold Mike MK2 excels in delivering an exceptionally low noise floor and minimal distortion. With a total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) as low as 0.016% at 1 kHz for the microphone preamp, and noise levels reaching -91.2 dBu A-weighted, this unit guarantees that your recordings will be clean and transparent. This level of fidelity translates directly to more detailed and dynamic audio, allowing subtle performance nuances to shine through. The impressive dynamic range of 110 dB ensures your recordings have plenty of headroom, avoiding clipping and distortion even during the most demanding peaks.

A key component of the Gold Mike MK2’s sonic character is its vacuum tube circuitry, powered by a robust internal linear power supply with a toroidal transformer. Operating at +/- 18 V for analog audio and delivering +250 V for the tube anode, this setup provides stable and noise-free power, which is crucial for maintaining the signature warmth and richness associated with tube amplification. The inclusion of phantom power (+48 V) makes this preamp compatible with a wide array of condenser microphones, expanding its versatility in any recording environment.

The frequency response of the Gold Mike MK2 extends well beyond the audible range, from 10 Hz to up to 93 kHz depending on tube gain settings. What does this mean for you? It ensures that the preamplifier captures even the finest details of your audio signal, from the deepest lows to the brightest highs, without coloration or loss of clarity. Additionally, the balanced maximum output gain of 26.8 dBu paired with a low output impedance of 50 Ω makes it easy to integrate seamlessly with other professional audio gear, preserving signal integrity throughout your signal chain.

Practicality and durability are also central to the design of the Gold Mike MK2. The unit is powered via selectable mains voltage (230 V AC / 50 Hz or 115 V AC / 60 Hz) with robust fuse protection, ensuring safe operation in a variety of studio settings worldwide. Despite its sophisticated internal components, the preamplifier maintains a reasonable power consumption maximum of 25 W, making it energy-efficient for prolonged use. Its physical form factor and dual-channel functionality make it an ideal centerpiece for both analog and hybrid digital-analog studios.

In summary, the SPL Audio Gold Mike MK2 Dual-Channel Preamplifier is an investment in sound quality that pays dividends in every recording session. It combines meticulous engineering, exceptional technical specifications, and musical tube character to bring out the best in your audio sources. Whether you’re capturing vocals, instruments, or both simultaneously, this preamp offers the reliability, clarity, and warmth essential for professional audio production. Choose the Gold Mike MK2 to elevate your studio’s sonic capabilities with confidence and precision.
