Sonido sonando

Practically perfect in (almost) every way
This handy recorder gives high-quality results. I believe it uses the field recorder pre-amps used in the Zoom F-series to deliver impressively low self-noise, which helps distinguish it from the new ‘Essential’ series of Zoom handy recorders. Its larger X/Y mics are brilliant and incredibly sensitive, however I typically use it with an external mic. No wind protection is supplied with the unit but is essential if using the X/Y mics outdoors. Due to the size of the capsules, a correctly-fitting fluffy is quite hard to track down. As far as I know, Zoom doesn’t make one of their own.
Of course the Zoom H5 Studio costs considerably more than the H4 essential, which may meet many users’ needs perfectly well, leaving a fair chunk of money in the pocket to spend on a shiny new mic.
As a replacement for the venerable H5, which is still available from various sellers and considerably cheaper, the Studio scores well for its low self-noise, 32-bit float recording, and easier interface. The H5 was built like a tank, but the H5 Studio, like the Essential series, is constructed out of creaky plastic and, despite the shock mounting of the X/Y capsules, handling noise noticeably intrudes on recordings.
This is not an issue if you use external mics, but if you are planning to hand hold the unit, I would suggest buying a mini tripod and shock mount to use as a handle for it. I would also suggest investing in a case to protect the device when transporting it.
The unit seems to eat batteries – especially with 48v phantom power turned on – so I tend to use an external USB power bank or USB power plug wherever I can.
I am a big fan of this device which, creaky plastic aside, is practically perfect. It shines as a take-anywhere portable device. It’s an investment for sure, but one I don’t regret.

HIGH QUALITY FOR A GREAT PRICE!
This is an incredible product! As an audio enthusiast and foley artist, I use the mics it comes with constantly and I have never been dissapointed, and if I need an impromptu recording session I can just plug in a mic and record on the go!
Pros:
– Since getting this thing months ago, the battery has yet to die. It sincerely keeps on going!
– The accessibility of this product is incredible and I feel very productive when using it knowing what my exact levels are when recording.
– The u.i tells me everything i need to know and feels very succinct.
– The built in mics are high fidelity for foley, and are pretty decent for interviews (obviously compared to something like the NT-1, they do not compare in terms of fidelity, however they are extremely versatile and come pretty close without sacrificing any ranges of frequencies.
– The pre-amp is all you need. It sounds fantastic, so calm any doubts about if it will sound good. There is minimal difference between this and the h6 variant besides more plugins, and unless you have some kind of crazy interview setup or want to capture a large number of mics for like ghost hunting or something, this will do you good.
– The on board playback is super cool, and you can even plug in headphones or just keep it on the speaker
– Fantastic visualization of data that I never knew I needed away from home. It’s almost like a DAW without the super in depth editing aspect.
Cons:
– This should be obvious, but holding this thing in your hand by itself is not a good idea when recording, as the plastic material it is made out of audibly creaks and shifts when doing so even if not alot of movement is there. You gotta be a little careful when maneuvering that, but you can obviously either set it down or get a boom arm to navigate that issue as it has standard threading for such attachments.
– The U.I can sometimes feel a bit cluttered despite the succinct nature, and it can definitely feel a bit difficult to navigate with the scroll wheel, but this is not too much of a drawback as all of the navigation parts are made of high quality plastic, and they feel tactile.
– The speaker (unsurprisingly) is not the best for playback. You’ll definitely want headphones, as some frequencies are just cut out in playback when played on the tinny small speakers. Not a huge let down though, I never expected a “bluetooth speaker” quality anyways lol.
– The size can be hard to store without feeling like it will be moved around too much or jostled around. It’s also kind of unwieldy, but again this can be maneuvered by just getting an attachment arm for recording and a case for storage.
– Wind socks are kind of difficult to get on and off the built in mics.
All in all, very good handy piece of hardware for on the go recording, and has great firmware built in!

absolut nackig daherkommt. Kein USB Kabel, keine tote Katze, kein Nichts…
