Delivering impeccable sound quality, rock-solid reliability, and endless flexibility, the Wolff Audio Console ST is everything a modern large-format analog console should be. Offering versatile mic preamp, dynamics control, and equalization options via 500 Series expansion and a near-infinite variety of channel-count, signal-flow, and module configurations, Console ST can be custom ordered to fit your studio’s current requirements and easily expanded to accommodate future needs as your business grows. Optimized for tracking and mixing in conventional analog or DAW-based hybrid workflows, the Wolff Audio Console ST may be configured, with or without flying-fader automation, for any audio production environment, spanning personal project studios to large commercial music facilities, immersive-format mixing setups, broadcast studios, mastering suites, and more.
Console ST’s pristine built-in preamps and input channel preserve the sonic character of the source material. With its internal circuitry balanced at +4dBu, the board offers massive headroom, effective interference cancellation, and localized summing for signal integrity and vanishingly low noise. Console ST is designed to be completely modular with 8-channel bays containing processor buckets that house interchangeable modules and are configurable to meet specific audio processing requirements. An efficient, space-saving in-line design that splits the input channel into two paths, the board offers outstanding routing flexibility with three simultaneous, summable inputs, three stereo Mix buses, eight Sends (two mono and one stereo with three assignable buses), an insert point with a wet/dry blend control, expansion bus and send modules, and all key points in the signal path available on DB25 connectors.
Occupying the majority of real estate on Console ST is the 802a Input Channel Strip, which offers comprehensive control over inputs, sends, routing, DAW integration, stereo bus assignment, solo modes, polarity reverse, and more. The 802a’s input selector buttons let you introduce three simultaneous signals into one module. If more than one input is selected, they will sum into the 802a, allowing for large channel counts on mixdown. This section also includes a trim control for the summed inputs.
You can assign the two mono sends and one stereo send to three buses (each with a cut and pre-fade button) for routing, cue feeds, or effects. Send C is equipped with an external input function to neatly route an effects send and return directly from and back to the channel without the need for patching. The stereo and send buses all fold into the Grand Master Fader as selected in the Master Section. Console ST features three configurable solo modes: SIP (solo in place), PFL (momentary pre-fader level), and AFL (after-fader level). Likewise, the Mute function offers multiple configurations with color-coded button indication to keep you status savvy at all times. There’s also a solo safe switch, which ensures that the channel will not mute when SIP is engaged.
Facilitating the seamless transition between tracking, mixing, and summing are Console ST’s DAW mode, Mix mode, and Summing mode. Console ST’s implementation of DAW mode is similar to traditional in-line consoles, wherein the 802a’s small rotary fader controls tracking level while the main 100mm fader controls the level from your DAW outputs — or vice versa when the FDR Flip button is engaged. In Mix or Summing mode, each channel can accommodate four inputs, giving you 96 inputs on mixdown with a 24-channel console configuration and 192 inputs on a 48-channel board. The FDR=0 button activates Summing mode — this function sets the main fader at unity gain so the console can be used for summing while using DAW automation.
A handy feature of the 802a is the TQ, a simple 1-knob tilting equalizer with a broad, flattering Baxandall-style curve. Directly above is a highpass filter, sweepable from 20Hz to 1.5kHz, and a lowpass filter sweepable from 500Hz to 20kHz. Together, this unique grouping of tone-shaping controls allows you to quickly and intuitively tweak your inputs without getting bogged down. When it’s time to roll up your sleeves and engage in serious sound sculpting, this version of Console ST also includes Wolff Audio’s formidable FREQ sweepable 4-band parametric equalizer with proportional Q installed in per-channel 500 Series slots.
FREQ’s high and low bands offer up to 15dB of boost or cut at 2kHz–20kHz and 75Hz–700Hz, respectively. Both bands feature a Wide mode button which, when pressed, changes the default 1/3-octave shelving to fixed-Q 2.5-octave bell curves. The high-mid and low-mid bands, spanning 350Hz–10kHz and 25Hz–2.2kHz, respectively, also offer ±15dB of boost/cut, but they operate a bit differently with respect to Q. Here, the default is proportional-Q, which can be switched to a fixed 1/3-octave hi Q with a press of the 1/3 notch button available on both midrange sections. As the two midrange bands overlap each other, as well as the HF and LF bands, you can employ an age-old studio trick that involves broad boosts combined with narrow cuts. On a kick drum, try a broad boost at, say, 60Hz and a narrow cut at 400Hz. Adding bottom-end weight while attenuating frequencies that crowd the lower midrange allows the kick drum to punch through the track without obscuring other elements in your mix. While your mileage may vary as to exact frequencies, the Wolff Audio FREQ gives you complete freedom to sweep around and zero in on your target sound.
The Wolff Audio Console ST’s robust 802m Stereo Master Section offers a versatile array of controls for your master buses. It includes a small trim fader, Insert (INS) and Blend (BLND) controls, and a comprehensive Solo section with Solo in Place (SIP), Pre Fader Solo (PFL), and After Fader Solo (AFL) options. A Solo Clear (CLR) button is available to reset channel solo functions, blinking when a Solo button is activated.
Moreover, you can set and clear the console’s input assignments directly from the 802m module. Additionally, an LED Kill (ø LED) button disables the On/Mute button LED signal indicators, which pulse to your signal’s audio level. The 802m Stereo Master Section also includes All Cut and All On buttons, enabling you to mute or activate all modules simultaneously.
Each of the 802m Stereo Master Section’s buses features Cut, Blend, Insert, and Grand Master (GM) buttons, assigning the console’s three stereo buses and three stereo send buses to the Grand Master fader. The two mono sends include a Cut button, while the three stereo Sends have both Cut and GM buttons. Finally, the 802m module enables effective routing of six stereo buses to the Grand Master output.
Wolff Audio designed Console ST for unerring accuracy. But despite its complete absence of coloration, Console ST includes a particularly ingenious feature that nevertheless allows you to record with the sound of your favorite consoles. Console ST’s three stereo buses feed a set of three Tone Cards. Each card consists of a summing amp and a bus booster amp, enabling each bus to be outfitted with the op-amp and transformer of your choice on a convenient, swappable cassette. The option for multiple Tone Cards on the mix buses enables Console ST to sound like a variety of sought-after large-format studio consoles.
