Rupert Neve Designs’ RNDI Overview
The Rupert Neve Designs RNDI Active Transformer Direct Interface, designed by the man himself to express the source instrument’s full tone and vibrancy while balancing and isolating the original signal, increases the standard for DIs. The interface, developed via experimenting with novel transformer designs, employs class-A biased discrete FET amplifiers with low-impedance, transformer-balanced outputs to provide constant performance over cable lengths of up to 100′ with minimum loss of high-frequency information.
The device is supplied by industry-standard 48V phantom power via an XLR connector. It generates a very high impedance input of 2 MOhms, ensuring constant performance for a wide range of instruments. The class-A architecture eliminates crossover distortion, which would otherwise introduce musically discordant and higher-order odd harmonics. Instead, the device adds 2nd-order (octave) and 3rd-order (fifth above octave) harmonics to enhance the sound. The system’s discrete architecture eliminates any integrated circuits or digital components that might hurt the sound character.
In instrument mode, the DI provides +21.5 dBU of gain and is also compatible with professional line-level sources like as interfaces, CD players, and drum machines without a pad. This enables the gadget to function as a “preamp” and adjust the tone of a previously recWidth
4″orded piece of music. Simply connect the audio interface’s channel output to the DI’s input and turn on 48V power. “Re-Preamping” allows you to adapt the tone of another preamp to the source and more accurately automate or adjust the preamp’s drive level.
When in speaker mode, the machine can handle the output of a 1000W power amplifier (92 Vrms or 266 Vp-p) to capture the entire tone of the instrument, preamp, EQ, inserts, and amplifier output stages before it reaches the speakers. This helps the engineer to eliminate any bleed in a live scenario, as well as any undesirable tone provided by the speaker cabinet or microphone. When used with current speaker emulation plug-ins, engineers may benefit from the flexibility of digital modeling as well as the non-linear response of an analog amplifier.
