5 reviews for Mooer Rage Machine, metal distortion pedal

You just can’t beat the price.
Currently I use an Xtotic for Overdrive and an MXR Super badass for Distortion. I needed a METAL pedal to fill in the sound spectrum. Many can be noisy or overpriced, or just not right for whatever the reason. I typically search youtube for ideas and decided to try this one.First off, it has a fixed gain (you can’t turn the gain up or down) so the noise factor is also fixed. The large knob actually controls the Q frequency so you can dial in the type of sound you want. Sound goes from hollow (wah) type, too razor sharp. It has plenty of drive and presence. Other controls are volume and Low & High which effectively work. Very happy with this pedal.

The sound of one of my ultimate heroes captured in a pedal
I found the Mooer Rage Machine by happy accident. I was actually looking for something more like the Digitech Scott Ian Black 13 pedal, which sounds sort of like a Mesa but grittier. Before I continue, the pedal’s name begs clarification. Mooer calls it the ‘Rage Machine,’ but if you’re thinking this thing might sound anything like Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, STOP, DO NOT GET THIS PEDAL. This sounds nothing like Morello, and you’re going to be sad if you thought it did.I ran through a slew of demos of this pedal on YouTube, just curious. Most of them were just okay. Nothing really stood out. I was about ready to write it off as another mediocre metal pedal–until one demo by Prymaxe gave me a ‘eureka moment’ unlike any other. . . .It was the sound of Randy Rhoads. The playing wasn’t dead-on but it sounded eerily authentic. It’s a distinctive, now reviled sound–scooped, dry, trebly, nasal, lacking in bass. It’s a bright, icepicky sound that attacks your ears, and when it’s done, you might be glad it’s over.Randy Rhoads was one of my ultimate guitar heroes. But I had never bothered to learn Randy’s stuff, and a big part of that was the fact that getting his sound was extremely difficult. You couldn’t just scoop out the mids and sound like Randy. The only way I knew how to do it was to put an MXR Distortion + in front of a cranked 100-watt Marshall Super Lead Plexi, like Randy did–and of course, that was never going to happen for me.The Rage Machine is Randy Rhoads in a pedal, something I never expected to find. It fulfills a major bucket list item in my playing, as I can finally sound like one of my heroes. The pedal’s controls include Level, Low, High, and Rage. Mids are left scooped as a factory setting, so there’s no Mid control. The main knob, the Rage control, doesn’t adjust the amount of gain, it just makes some changes in the EQ to how it’s voiced–more or less spacious, I guess. Adjustments are easy to make, and I don’t think there are any ‘magic’ settings. Some believe this is a copy of a Digitech Death Metal pedal. Others think it’s more like a Digitech Metal Master. When matching up the controls with the Rage Machine, the latter seems to be correct. The Rage Machine is a very specific, very divisive sound–hollow, dry, and spiky. If you’re into that, like I am, it slays. But if you’re not into it, you never will be. If you’re on the fence about this pedal at all, walk away–it will disappoint you, and it’s probably best to skip it.

    Awesome micro pedals.
Easy to use. Very small in size but big in sound. Easy to bring on any gig because it fits in my pocket. I am buying a set of five pedals for my basic guitar sound. Compressor, Distortion, Equalizer, Modulation, and Digital Delay. I will mount them on my Gator Mini Bone pedalboard using velcro. Awesome sound for a fair price and also very lightweight.

Great pedal! More gain than the MXR Super Bada$$ …
Great pedal! More gain than the MXR Super Bada$$ distortion, but not quite as much as the MXR Fullbore. It’s great for chugging chords, but articulate enough to solo. Overall, it’s a great pedal to have on your board!!

    it is very good.
For a metal pedal, it is very good.
