Experience the distinctive tonal quality and dynamic control that only a vintage-style compressor can provide. The Golden Age Project COMP-3 A Jr addresses the demand for authentic sound character by employing a fully discrete signal path free of integrated circuits, resulting in a more natural, musical compression that modern solid-state designs often lack.
At the core of the COMP-3 A Jr is a classic circuit design enhanced by an integrated optocoupler that governs gain reduction, allowing for smooth and transparent compression with a fastest attack time of approximately 1 millisecond. This ensures precise control over transients while preserving the integrity of your source material.
The unit’s transformer-balanced input and output stages use two dedicated transformers optimized for their respective roles. This configuration not only supports both balanced and unbalanced connections but also delivers a maximum output level of 25 dBu, ensuring compatibility with professional studio equipment and accommodating a wide dynamic range without distortion.
Operational simplicity is built in, with only two main controls: Gain Makeup and Gain Reduction. This minimal interface allows engineers and musicians to quickly dial in the desired compression effect without complexity. The three-position TIME switch offers selectable attack and release timing presets, which can be further customized via internal jumpers for tailored response characteristics.
Additional features include an LED meter that can be toggled between output level and gain reduction display, a hardwire bypass switch for instant A/B comparisons, and versatile connectivity options with XLR and TRS input/output jacks. The link jack facilitates stereo operation by connecting two units seamlessly.
Physically, the COMP-3 A Jr is housed in a compact 1 RU quarter rack format, allowing up to four units to be installed in the Golden Age Project UNITE MKII 19-inch rack kit. The external power supply isolates the audio circuitry from power-related interference, preserving signal purity and extending component longevity.
Built with robust components and designed for longevity, the COMP-3 A Jr delivers classic compression performance with dependable reliability. Its combination of vintage circuitry, high-quality transformers, and straightforward controls make it a valuable addition for professionals seeking authentic, musical compression at a competitive price point.
