A great choice for a two channel home theater preamplifier.
I put together a TV sound bar equivalent using some PA equipment I had laying around. I had a couple of EV 12 inch tops, and 18 inch sub, a Crown Drivecore 2 amp and a DAC for my streaming and blu ray sources. I found that I needed something between the DAC and the Crown amp. The Crown is much happier with a balanced connection to the mixer than an RCA connection directly to the DAC. With a direct unbalanced connection from the DAC to the amp I was getting an irritating high frequency noise. The Yamaha made that go away. The MG10 is so much more versatile that any audio pre amplifier I could find during my searches. It’s also priced better that most any audio preamplifier. It’s quite compact and not too big to fit in with my setup. There are some very useful features on this mixer that are not found on any preamplifier I came across. Youtube videos from independent content providers can be great but sometimes they lack the sound production from more corporate sources. I love how I can use the pan rotary in order to choose the left or right channel to play on both speakers. I can also use the pan rotaries to blend the left and right channels into a mono output on both speakers. I’ve come across Youtube live streams where a participant manages to have their microphone attached to only the left channel. The pan rotaries can fix that so that the voice comes out on both speakers. I’ve also tried using the compressor on channels 1 and 2 to tone down the crashes and bangs on an action movie soundtrack. I hate it when in one scene the actors are whispering their lines and the next scene they are firing 100 cannons into a mountain of cymbals. I’m an old man with old man ears and I find it hard to set a volume that allows me to hear the quiet dialog and not have my neighbors contact the authorities for noise violations during the loud parts. I usually give up trying to hear what’s said and instead rely on closed captioning. The compressor function on this mixer seems to help to keep the loud parts a little quieter. The MG10 is a great way to build a sound bar replacement.
