Overview

sE Electronics have teamed up with Rupert Neve to offer the RNR1, an extremely high-performance active ribbon microphone, and the first product in the sE Rupert Neve Signature Series. The RNR1 offers natural reproduction of source material, and uses a custom circuit design to deliver a frequency response of 20 Hz to 25 kHz.

The mic has a sleek black design, and offers a figure 8 polar pattern, allowing it to clearly pick up sounds on either side of the mic body. A low-end rolloff switch reduces the effects of low-frequency noises. The mic has a standard 3-pin XLR connector, and operates via 48V phantom power. A shock mount and flight case are included.

Neve Design
sE Electronics has joined with Rupert Neve to create high-performance microphones for professional users
Condenser-Like Performance
The RNR1 has a frequency response approximately 3 times wider than competing ribbon mics, giving it a performance similar to a condenser mic
Natural Sound Reproduction
A custom circuit design allows the mic to capture and output high frequencies in exceptional detail. Hand-wound transformers provide large amounts of headroom and extremely low noise levels
Figure 8 Polar Pattern
The mic’s figure 8 polar pattern lets it effectively capture sound from either side of the mic body
LF Rolloff Switch
The LF rolloff switch reduces the effects of low-frequency noises, and also reduces proximity effect
Phantom Power
The mic accepts 48V phantom power via the standard XLR connector
Accessories Included
A deluxe flight case and shock mount are included

The s E Electronics Rupert Neve RNR1 Active Ribbon Microphone is designed for discerning audio professionals and enthusiasts who demand the warm, natural sound character of a ribbon microphone combined with modern active electronics for enhanced performance. Whether you are recording vocals, acoustic instruments, or capturing ambient sound, this microphone offers a unique blend of vintage tonal quality and cutting-edge technology to deliver pristine, detailed audio with minimal coloration. If you seek to elevate your recordings with a microphone that excels at reproducing rich harmonics and subtle nuances, the RNR1 is an ideal choice.

Traditional ribbon microphones are renowned for their smooth, natural sound but often suffer from low output levels and vulnerability to distortion at high sound pressure levels. The RNR1 addresses these challenges by incorporating active electronics alongside its hand-crafted 2.5-micron aluminum ribbon transducer. This active design increases the microphone’s sensitivity to 25 mV/Pa (-32 dB), meaning it captures more detail and requires less gain from your preamp, significantly reducing noise and preserving audio fidelity. This feature is particularly valuable in professional studio settings where clarity and signal integrity are paramount.

The RNR1 features a figure-8 polar pattern, capturing sound equally from the front and rear while rejecting sounds from the sides. This characteristic is beneficial for techniques like mid-side stereo recording or capturing room ambiance, giving you creative flexibility. Additionally, the microphone’s frequency response spans a full 20 Hz to 20 kHz range, ensuring it faithfully reproduces the entire audible spectrum from deep bass to sparkling highs. The inclusion of a 100 Hz low-cut filter helps reduce unwanted low-frequency rumble or handling noise, enabling cleaner recordings without compromising the microphone’s tonal warmth.

Practicality is also a strong suit of the RNR1. Its maximum sound pressure level of 137 dB (measured at 0.5% total harmonic distortion at 1 kHz) means it can handle loud sound sources such as guitar amps or brass instruments without distortion. The microphone’s equivalent noise level of 17 dB(A) and signal-to-noise ratio of 77 dB ensure quiet, clear recordings even in less-than-ideal acoustic environments. The RNR1 operates on standard 48V phantom power, compatible with virtually all professional audio interfaces and mixers, and connects via a rugged 3-pin male XLR connector for reliable signal transfer.

Measuring 268 mm (10.55 inches) in length with a diameter of 47 mm (1.85 inches), and weighing 860 grams (30.34 ounces), the RNR1 is a well-balanced microphone that feels solid and durable in hand or on a stand without being cumbersome. Its robust build quality ensures it withstands the rigors of both studio and live performance use. The microphone’s design and specifications make it highly versatile for a range of applications—from studio vocal recordings and acoustic guitar miking to orchestral and broadcast work, where capturing natural sound detail is critical.

In summary, the s E Electronics Rupert Neve RNR1 Active Ribbon Microphone is an exceptional tool for audio professionals who want the classic tonal richness of a ribbon mic enhanced with modern active circuitry for improved sensitivity and noise performance. Its thoughtful design, extended frequency response, high SPL handling, and low noise characteristics make it suitable for demanding recording environments and creative applications alike. Investing in the RNR1 means acquiring a microphone capable of delivering studio-quality sound that stands out in any project, backed by s E Electronics’ reputation for craftsmanship and reliability.
