The onboard Phrase Loop function lets you instantly create layered loops and phrases. You can record and store 50 phrases internally, with each containing up to three layers. You can also save your phrase data on your USB Memory. With Version 2, you can control the start of Phrase Loop using pad velocity, buttons presses, and/or an optional footswitch. Additionally, you can toggle freely between solo play (Kit mode) and phrase play (Phrase Loop mode).
Unlike the original Octapad PAD-8, which was strictly a MIDI controller, the Octapad SPD-30 is a controller that’s packed with its own internal bank of sounds. You can customize the sounds with the onboard controls for tuning, muffling, attack, pitch sweep, and more. Version 2 also adds a new Output Gain function to increase the overall output of the Octapad SPD-30, providing a +6 dB boost when a stronger signal is needed. It’s like having a truckload of customizable drum and percussion instruments in one portable package.
The Octapad SPD-30 benefits from Roland’s most advanced V-Drum triggering technology. Each pad is a separate, isolated unit, providing the ultimate in sensitivity with complete crosstalk rejection. Roland have developed this idea very productively. Years ago I had an SPD-11: this is so much more flexible and usable.Crucially, the pads are excellent. The RH control panel is powerful and intuitive with some great features (i.e. the ability to copy settings on a pad-by-pad basis from existing kits into a new kit). There is real-time control of many parameters.The sounds are generic Roland fare – not really my cup of tea but professional sounding with convincing layering and decent effects.The phrase looping function would be great for live use and is very straightforward to use.Unless you absolutely MUST have multiple outputs there’s very little to find fault with.

This is just what I needed to introduce more versatility into my drum parts in my song recordings. Finally realized that I didn’t need the larger e-drum kits that simulated placement of the individual drums, etc., like acoustic drums, and didn’t have room for even the smallest versions. I just need to make the sounds for recording, and this has them. Better reliability than cheaper ones, I expect. Recommend a bass pedal and a couple of trigger pads for the snare and high hat.
